Who is D.J. Stephan?
D.J. Stephan left the University of Arizona to co-found Notehall, an online marketplace where college students could buy and sell class notes. Launched in 2008 with Sean Conway, Justin Miller and Fadi Chalfoun, Notehall reached about 40% of University of Arizona students within eight months. Stephan was named a finalist for America's Best Young Entrepreneur in 2009. That October, the team appeared on the first season of Shark Tank and received a $90,000 offer from Barbara Corcoran.
Weeks later they walked away from the deal to join the DreamIt Ventures accelerator instead. In June 2011, Stephan and Conway sold Notehall to Chegg for about $3.7 million in equity, and the service was folded into Chegg's homework help business. Stephan moved on to real estate software, co-founding SkySlope in Sacramento, which grew into a widely used real estate transaction management platform with more than 75,000 monthly subscribers. He served as its chief operating officer and an owner, and later took on the roles of co-founder, chief revenue officer and board chairman at Streamline.
