How Shark Tank valuation works
When a founder says "I'm asking for $100,000 for 10% of my company," they're implying the whole business is worth $1,000,000. That's the post-money valuation: the amount divided by the equity percentage. Subtract the investment to get the pre-money valuation ($900,000), what the business is worth before the cash arrives.
Sharks rarely accept that number at face value. They compare it to sales and profit, and counter with more equity, a royalty or a loan. Our analysis of every pitch shows deals typically close well below the asking valuation. See Shark Tank by the numbers and our guide to how valuation works on Shark Tank.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate valuation on Shark Tank?
Divide the amount of money asked for by the percentage of equity offered. Asking $100,000 for 10% implies a $1,000,000 valuation ($100,000 ÷ 0.10).
What is a pre-money vs. post-money valuation?
Post-money is the company value including the new investment (amount ÷ equity). Pre-money subtracts the investment: $1,000,000 post-money minus $100,000 invested is $900,000 pre-money.
How does a royalty deal pay back?
The investor receives a fixed amount per unit sold (or a percentage of sales) until a target is reached. Payback time equals the target divided by royalty earned per month.
What sales multiple do Sharks use?
It varies by industry and growth, but Sharks often sanity-check valuations against annual sales or profit. A valuation many times higher than yearly sales usually needs strong growth or margins to justify it.
