Who is Kat Thomas?
Kat Thomas was a trader at Goldman Sachs alongside Ashley Thompson when the two decided to commercialize the overnight oats Thompson had been making since childhood. They left the bank in 2015 to launch MUSH, a refrigerated, ready-to-eat oats brand, and relocated to San Diego to run it full time. Thomas served as the company's chief operating officer. After a first year of about $70,000 in sales, the founders went on Shark Tank in Season 9 seeking $300,000 for 10%.
Mark Cuban and Barbara Corcoran both bid, and they accepted Cuban's offer of the full $300,000 plus a line of credit. The investment helped MUSH expand production and retail distribution, and the brand was later sold at Whole Foods, Costco, Target and Wegmans. Thomas stepped away from the COO role in 2019 but kept her equity in the company. She went on to become CEO of Bare Performance Nutrition, a sports nutrition brand, and is a co-owner of Bump Coffee.
