Who is Mike O'Dell?
Mike O'Dell is an Oklahoma City nurse anesthetist who built a seven-figure quilting business on the side. Looking for a creative outlet outside the hospital, he founded Legit Kits in 2020 to sell quilt kits that bundle pre-selected fabrics with patterns, aimed at people who want to make a finished quilt without assembling materials themselves. The company offers more than 60 designs priced from about $89 to $599. O'Dell kept his medical career, working four days a week at a hospital and devoting one day a week to the business, which he set up to run through a small team of trusted employees. Legit Kits turned profitable in 2023 and brought in about $1.4 million in revenue in 2024.
On Shark Tank in Season 16 he asked for $150,000 for 5%. Kevin O'Leary agreed to those terms with a $10 royalty per sale added, pointing to the brand's potential in social media advertising, and O'Dell accepted. The deal later fell apart after filming; O'Dell has not said why. He continues to run Legit Kits alongside his anesthesia work.
