Who is Ashley Sankar?
Ashley Sankar founded 1920, also styled NineteenTwenty, after seven years as a U.S. Army logistics officer and later logistics roles at companies including Siemens and EY. Her time in the military shaped the idea: clothing that adapts to a busy, on-the-move life. The Atlanta-based brand, started in 2018, is best known for a jacket that converts into a tote bag. A TikTok demonstration in late 2022 drew tens of millions of views and about $78,000 in sales in a single month.
She runs the company with her husband, Zach Sankar, who serves as chief operating officer, and at the time of their Shark Tank pitch both still held full-time corporate jobs, hers as a senior program manager at Amazon. The brand had about $505,000 in lifetime sales when they appeared in Season 16 and asked for $250,000 for 10%. Robert Herjavec offered $250,000 for 25%, and they accepted. After the episode aired in November 2024, the couple added new convertible pieces including a skirt and a beanie.
